Thank you to our California firefighters and all those who came to help – over 4,000 personnel were onsite in the effort to fight the Caldor Fire in El Dorado County and the Tahoe Basin.
To date, Caldor has burned over 220,000 acres and the battle continues - containment is now at 76%. Sadly almost 800 single residences in El Dorado county were destroyed by Caldor. El Dorado Community Foundation created the Caldor Fire Fund to channel donations to families and individuals impacted by the fire. You can donate here.
Air quality in the Tahoe Basin was off the AQI charts by late August. Scientific research efforts have already begun to assess the impact of the smoke and ash on Lake Tahoe's water clarity and quality.
South Lake Tahoe was saved as was Heavenly Mountain and Kirkwood. Sierra was hit hard and is literally still smoldering as the fire remains active within the resort area. All three mountain resorts are planning to open, assuming the snow arrives this fall.
Left and Center: Heavenly fired up its snowmaking system at the peak of the threat late August and right: Current photo of Sierra - still in the fight.
THANK YOU FIREFIGHTERS and ALL the Hotshot crews!
